Implementation of this Daily Reading Log is sure to lead your students to OWN their READING!
When I first introduce the DRL at the beginning of the year, I'll be honest, I get some nervous students (and even some nervous parents!). However, it is inevitable that by the end of the semester, everyone appreciates the reading accountability it provides for students. The parents and students who once voiced their concern will be the ones who end up reminding me to distribute new ones weekly if I happen to forget! Learning is a beautiful thing.
How they work:
After an exploration of reading levels and genres, I introduce the reading log. Students then hear that they will be required to read EVERY NIGHT for at least 15-20 minutes. Each night, they are prompted to write a short reading response on the log. At the end of the week, a parent signs it. They turn in the log on Monday, I distribute new ones, and the cycle continues!
***THIS HOLDS STUDENTS ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR READING PROGRESSION****
The reading CERTIFICATE is an excellent incentive for my students. I make it easy on myself and quickly grade the DRLs, assigning 5 points per correctly-completed daily response. Then, when it comes time to tally up each students' total reading minutes (in order to give the certificates and have a little ice cream party), looking back in my grade book is an easy task in appointing points to time read.
