Independent Reading Programs are a great way to continue fostering a love of reading, and greater reading comprehension development, outside of the classroom.
In conjunction with Dialectical Journaling (see separate product), I ask my students to complete one project a term on a book they've read outside of class.
Attached, is a resource that helps guide students to finding and creating relevant, text-based projects that are right for the book they choose. Each suggestion has a guiding question for if this is the right project for you, and included clear criteria and scoring guidelines - so the student knows how to earn maximum credit, and the teacher is confident knowing how to award points.
Some terms, I have the students present their products to the class with an oral presentation. Other terms, I'll have students set up their projects as an exhibit hall in the classroom and invite a colleague to bring their class in for "glow" and "grow" feedback.
Feel free to contact me with any questions you have about this, or any of my products.
