The University of Reading Excellence is an exciting, innovative, all inclusive, year-long, independent reading program where students read to earn higher-level educational degrees. I designed this curriculum many years ago and it lit a fire under my students like none other. This 209 pages unit has everything you need to easily implement this fantastic program into your classroom. The uniqueness of this unit allows the struggling readers to achieve success and improve their reading confidence, gifted students thrive because they are challenged and regular students have the opportunity to make one year's growth in their reading ability. Students can earn Associate Degrees, Bachelor Degrees, Masters Degrees, Doctorate Degrees and Post Doctorate Degrees. For example, If a student starts at a 3.5 independent reading level and reads a Realistic Fiction book, and completes a book report and an interview he or she is halfway to getting an Associate's degree. His or her next book will need to be a different genre and one month higher, a 3.6, The next books would follow the same pattern. After students have earn a degree there is a graduation ceremony where they receive actual diplomas. This is key to the success of the program. Here are the requirements for the different degrees:
Associate Degree: Read two books, each a different genre and each one month higher than the other, complete two book reports and two interviews.
Bachelor Degree: Read four books, each a different genre and each one month higher that the last, complete four book reports and four interviews and create a book project on one of the books read.
Masters Degree: Read four books, each a different genre and each one month higher than the last, complete four book reports and four interviews and create two different book projects on two of the books read.
Doctorate Degree: Read four books, each a different genre and each one month higher than the last, complete four book reports and four interviews and create three different book projects on three of the books read.
Post Doctorate Degree: Read four books ALL THE SAME GENRE and each one month higher than the last, complete four book reports and four interviews and create three different book projects on three of the books read.
The unit includes: The Nuts and Bolts of the entire program, lessons on the components of the unit including ones on genres and themes, reading conversion charts to determine students' reading level, over 500 book titles to help students find books at their reading level, 30 book projects categorized into a general group (Realistic Fiction, Science Fiction, Mystery and Fantasy) and also Biography and Poetry with detailed rubrics for each one, book report forms and book interviews with rubrics, there are official record sheets to monitor student progress, diploma templates, list of materials needed to make the program a success and the contents of the teacher 3-Ring binder as well as a volunteer(s) binder.
