In this project, students ditch another tiresome book report for a more open, creative, and student-driven project. Through careful scaffolding, students read a book of their choosing, complete a reading journal, draft a project proposal, and then design an original work of art that captures a central theme in their book. The finished project is not simply an art project, however; students must also provide an analysis of their work and how it expresses their chosen theme. Additionally, the projects are an excellent way to decorate a classroom or a library so that the entire school can celebrate the students' hard work.
The project includes a sample reading journal entry, a sample artifact analysis, samples of student artifacts and student analyses, as well as a rubric.
This project meets the following Common Core Standards: 1) Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze in detail its development over the course of the text, including how it emerges and is shaped and refined by specific details; provide an objective summary of the text. 2) Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.
