These cards were created for accountability, quick formative assessment, and as a guide for independent reading conferencing. I conference every week with each of my students. We check on the progress of their independent reading books (we use AR) and set a weekly goal. So many students enjoy trying to beat their goals and many have found a love of reading because they have something to work toward. Through this process, though, I have found some students may be yanking my chain when it comes to which pages they actually read to. In addition, some are completely honest, but can’t pass an AR test after they finish reading their book. To help combat these issues, I use these cards during conferencing . It takes only about a minute or so and seems to keep everyone on track.
During conferencing, I flip to a random card and ask the student the question on the card. Sometimes, the card I turn to does not apply to the book they are reading, so I choose a different card.
How To Prepare:
I printed the cards on cardstock, laminated, hole-punched, and looped on a metal ring. This makes for easy access to all cards.
