If you're looking for a fun, Common Core aligned reading response log that hits tons of standards and goes far past the usual "What was your favorite part?" then this is it!!!
I created this literature response log after years of using logs that were just "ok." Most did not require students to think as deeply as I wanted them to or to search for text evidence. In this log, students are presented with *15* response choices to select from after reading (could be after reading one picture book, or one chapter in a novel, or a set number of pages). If students do one response per day/night, this log will last three weeks!
Use it for homework, "Drop Everything And Read" time, or even along with your class read aloud to make sure students are keeping up. These responses could even be integrated into a literature circle.
In each question, a key word or two that highlights the standard the question assesses is in bold print.
*Character analysis and traits
*Setting descriptions and visualizations
*Searching for text evidence
*Point of view
Also included is a reference aid for students to use listing question starters, character traits, and themes, and a scoring sheet for grading purposes.
Almost every response requires students to use evidence from the text to support their thoughts, which is a crucial skill in today's elementary classroom.
If you're looking for a homework idea or reading idea that is not just busy work, please give this a try!! :)
