Independent Reading can be tough when trying to keep students accountable.
Here is one strategy I use occasionally within my reading workshop. Student write down interesting noticings, connections, or wonderings as they read their book or books. When independent reading is finished, the students can break up into share groups based on the different genres they read as a way to share their thoughts after reading.
I simply copy and cut, and pass them out on random days of reading workshop during independent reading. Begin by modeling during a reading workshop mini-lesson the first day you use them. Try it out and let me know how it works for you!
