Task cards are versatile tools that make your students active and reflective learners. These cards can also help you manage independent reading, something that can be difficult when students are at various places in different books. The questions on these cards can help them have meaningful discussions about books, even though they aren't reading the same thing.
Suggestions for Use:
-Draw cards randomly for full class discussion or to use as a writing prompt.
-Set up learning stations (one for character, one for theme, one for making text-self connections, etc.) Students can rotate from station to station where they will either do a journal entry or have a small group discussion—or a mix of both.
-Use them for small group discussions. Group students and give them a random grouping of cards. Students will take turns responding to the questions on the cards they have been assigned.
-Use them for reading conferences with your students.
Print them off on cardstock in either color or grey scale and then cut them out. I have included a page with “backs” for the cards, if you would like to have them look more finished, as well as blank ones that you can personalize. The cards will last longer if you laminate them, but that is not necessary. One handy way to use them is to group them in categories (use mine or make your own) and attach them with a book ring. You could also just mix them all together, ignoring the categories, for a more spontaneous discussion about the books.
