Each semester, I begin my Independent Reading Unit by following these slides. They have served me well!
Students start by identifying which Reader Type they are. Then, they will set an initial Smart Goal for themselves - I do not choose this. It was very important to me that students have total ownership over their reading progress. Students circle one of the Smart Goals they feel will suit them best and they then fill in their own criterion for which to be measured by. This has worked well in all of my classes - from freshmen to upperclassmen, from advanced English courses to basic preps.
There are also slides for each of the subsequent conference days. Look for handouts that accompany each of the reading conferences. Reading conferences are a great resource from Penny Kittle - they have been very effective in my student's progress towards a culture of reading.
