This is a two-page worksheet that students can complete based on what they have read. The directions emphasize that their selection of reading material is up to them, and reading material can include a book, a graphic novel, web articles, a magazine article, etc. Responses should be based on three to five pages of reading. Students are directed to identify and define new vocabulary words, in addition to selecting and discussing an important or interesting quote. The objective of the worksheet is to encourage regular independent reading, fiction or non-fiction, with an emphasis on close reading and analysis. The utility of this worksheet is that it applies to any reading material, and it does not wed the student to a particular piece of writing for a long period of time if they do not initially like the material. I assign this as an on-going bi-weekly homework assignment, although you may find it useful in another capacity, like an AIS class or Study Hall. Included is a completed sample, as well, based on a Newsela article, so that students may see how the worksheet is expected to be completed. Thank you!
