The research is clear - students learn to read by reading. But how do you increase student independent reading (IR) in the middle school? In this 30 page manual we give you everything you need to start or enhance your independent reading program. This manual is divided into three distinct sections:
Part I contains guidance for setting up an IT program in your classroom. In this section you will find answers to questions that you may have, as well as answers to questions you have not even considered! Like all Pattycakes products, we provide you with the research and tell you what really works!
Part II of the manual includes the accountability forms for students and conferencing forms for teachers. We have also included a Pattycakes original Interest Inventory that is great to use when assessing student IR interests.
Part III contains 2-pg guides to five popular middle school IR novels. We know that teachers are too busy to read every book that students may select, so this first volume has teacher guides for select novels. Using generic questions ("Who was the main character?" or "What was the conflict?") are not the solution to student conferencing. Using these guides will allow you to meaningfully engage with students in a discussion of the book. NOTE: we will be adding five more books per month to this series so let us know what books you would like to see included!
Book guides in Volume 1:
The Book Thief
Call it Courage
From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler
King of the Wind
Henry Reed, Inc.
Even if your students are not currently reading any of these books, we know that the first two sections of this manual will provide you with a strong research-based, ready-to-use guide to independent reading in your classroom.
