This product is intended for readers in grades K-5 for use during independent or private reading.
Pulling on the great work of Jennifer Serravallo and others from Teachers College, as well as the book, No More Independent Reading Without Support by Debbie Miller
I wanted to make independent reading more purposeful.
According to Allington, “The best way to get better at reading is to read.” Your classroom library needs to be the anchor for independent reading, filled with engaging texts at every level. See my Classroom Library and Organization
. Kids need to choose 10-12 books per week that they can have during independent reading. There is a Book Shopping schedule where shoppers (the kids) have a designated day to browse for their books that will sustain them during private reading time. This would be great to turn into a poster!
There is a goal-setting sheet where you may want to have it inside a file folder. You may want to use post-its with the goal (s) the student is working on. It could be fluency, decoding (breaking it into different decoding strategies), stamina or a goal more specifically aligned to comprehension.
I have included “Ways to Re-Read My Book” bookmark that can be printed on cardstock and laminated. Kids can use a paperclip and attach it to a different way to read. Likewise, it can be done for the fluency bookmark, which gives tips to readers to create more fluent reading. The last book mark is a slightly different “Ways to Read My Book/Reasons I Re-read.” Also included is a stamina rubric for kids to evaluate how they did during independent reading. We need to increase the amount of time they are reading, longer and stronger. Coupled with that, there is one more bookmark for increasing stamina and focus. All bookmarks come in color and black and white.
This product will surely kick-start your independent reading program.
*If you have purchased my Re-reading bookmark and/or Fluency & Stamina bookmark, these are slightly different.
