These are 8 different reading logs that students can use to track their independent reading at school or home. Each log focuses on using a specific reading strategy with their book for a week. After practicing using all of the strategies, one of the logs gives them the choice of applying any of the strategies they've learned.
It's important for teachers to model these strategies with read alouds, guided reading and literature circle groups. Students should also have a chance to apply reading strategies to independent reading books. These logs were created to help students use the strategies on their own and be able to write a short response to show their thinking.
When I collect them at the end of the week I would usually give them a chance to share some of their thinking from their logs for quick Book Talks. Students are always interested to hear what each other is reading. Some students would like to become the expert and share strong examples of how they used each strategy in their book.
Strategies focused on are:
*Predictions with support
*Determine Important Information
*Infer character feelings
*Choice - Mixed Strategies
