This item has been updated to include more clauses and more thorough directions.
This is a great activity that helps students review independent and dependent clauses and allows you to quickly assess students. The PowerPoint includes the following slides:
- Title slide
- Teacher directions
- Student directions
- Sorting slips 1
- Sorting slips 2
In this activity, students sort the slips of paper into three groups: Dependent Clauses, Independent Clauses, and “Not a Clause” (Phrases). I particularly included phrases to assess if students could not only can distinguish the difference between the two clause types, but also understand that a clause must have a subject and a verb (or else it is a phrase, not a clause). After completing the sorting activity, students must then write complex sentences that combine Independent Clauses and Dependent Clauses using proper punctuation.
