Product Description
Before students begin to read this powerful tale of survival and hope in the face of human savagery, it is helpful to understand the genesis of the Residential School System and the toll of it's aftermath. The PowerPoint presentation explores a brief history of these schools in Canada as well as major points of the Truth and Reconciliation Committee findings. A short biography of Richard Wagamese and the novel is included. There is a 2 minute video from CBC's The National which gives an account of a survivor of a res. school. There are two exercises, one is in groups of 3 or 4 and the other is an individual Reader Response. As a side note, it would be beneficial to the class to watch the National Film Boards documentary We Were Children:
"In this feature film, the profound impact of the Canadian government’s residential school system is conveyed through the eyes of two children...We Were Children gives voice to a national tragedy and demonstrates the incredible resilience of the human spirit." NFB
