This is a close reading activity meant to support your unit on the conflict between white settlers and Native Americans. It can fit anywhere within your year when the subject comes up...early in the colonial frontier, opening the Northwest Territory (Tecumseh), Indian Removal/Trail or Tears, post Civil War American West (Geronimo), etc.
The lesson centers around the Elton John song "Indian Sunset". It includes handouts for the lyrics, leveled close reading questions, a PowerPoint with timed activities and video clips. The hook video is a Tupac song called "Ghetto Gospel" which samples portions of the Elton John song throughout. Interesting discussions could be stimulated by asking students to compare the struggle of the young black man in the video with the struggles of the young Indian man in the song.
There are two video versions of the Elton John song embedded. The students will be asked to analyze the lyrics as well as how the music helps support the story.
There is a lot here to dig into!
