Increase rigor and engage critical thinking with the Common Core aligned questions and authentic assessments in this 16+page kit. Through short and extended constructed response students engage with the text and cite textual evidence to support each answer.
Aligned with 5th Grade Common Core Standards:
Reading Standards for Literature RL.1: Quote accurately from a (fictional) text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text.
Writing Standards W.9a: Draw evidence from literary texts to support analysis (and) reflection… Apply grade 5 Reading standards to literature (e.g. “Compare and contrast two or more characters, settings, or events in a story, drawing on specific details in the text [e.g., how characters interact]”).
Comprehension and Assessment Questions are leveled to correlate with Bloom’s (revised) Taxonomy and Webb’s Depth of Knowledge (DOK).
These comprehension questions & assessments can be used to differentiate for high readers in 4th grade, as well as to remediate for struggling readers in 6th grade.
QUIZZES – 2 pages each/worth 20 points for easy scoring. Students must cite textual evidence to receive full credit for each short constructed response.

Have your students answer and cite evidence to these questions DURING reading of the text, then discuss in small group or whole class.
