This exercise is designed to substitute for a lab exploring several chemical changes. I use this assignment for students that are absent or in school suspension on the day of lab.
Students read the descriptions of the experiments and identify the materials used, the results of the experiment, and which indicators of chemical change were present. The experiments described are the same as those completed by their clasmates, so the material covered is comparable.
This activity also strengthens reading comprehension, analysis, and writing skills for students requiring practice in those areas. I have found it to be very effective with inner-city immigrant students.
