Product Description
Teach your students in this twist on the jigsaw method about how the First Nations, Métis and Inuit people of Canada connected to the land as part of their belief system historically.

This product starts with a full lesson to help your students understand how geographical location impacts cultures both in the past and present. It leads into a research project where students work collaboratively to locate information using guiding research questions. They present their material in writing, drawings and optionally orally by explaining their group of people to the class.

Options are included to assess students including a scavenger hunt activity, comparison tasks and rubrics to assess their research. The rubric includes outcomes for both Social Studies and Language Arts. Options to set this project up as a bulletin board are included along with photographs of student examples.

Background information for most of the Indigenous groups is included for teachers to save you time!

This task aligns with the Alberta Program of Studies for Grade 4 or Grade 5 Social Studies, but is broad enough to be used with any lesson covering the lives of Indigenous people of Canada. We have designed this lesson to be easily used in 4/5 combined class, but it can be used with students as young as Grade 3 or up to Grade 6 (or even 7 if it fits with your curriculum). We have included instructions specifically for Grade 4, Grade 5 and Grade 4/5 teachers in Alberta.

This product is included in our Grade 4 Social Studies Bundle OR our Grade 5 Social Studies Bundle where you can save 20%!
