This lesson, developed by Shawneen Morrison, uses an exploration of dramatically different indigenous tribal groups to introduce the concept of culture. Links to video clips depicting first contact with a formerly isolated tribe, scientific explanations for seemingly “super-human” abilities in some tribes, and amazing feats that are a part of some tribal practices are all included in the product. Students complete a brief exercise outlining a typical day in their lives. After reviewing supplied background information links and an additional video link on the tribe they are assigned (many featuring music, dance, games, or distinct languages like click languages) they develop a contrasting outline of a typical day in the life of their assigned tribe. These contrasting outlines are presented to the class before students begin an analysis of the extent to which culture affects ability, personality, values, opinions, and practices. Other parts of the lesson raise student awareness of the prevalence of tribal cultures (around 5000 today with about 370 million members), threats to their ways of life, and the reasons that many believe their protection is essential for us all.
Important: Students will need access to the Internet to do the research for this assignment. Please be aware that seven of the video clips include some nudity. If you are uncomfortable with that, you will want to eliminate them from the list of tribes (this will leave 13). I left this product in a fully editable form so the list of tribes can be easily restricted.
