This handout asks students to identify examples of indirect characterization from a piece of text. This one page document gives students the opportunity to explain each type. The STEAL method of indirect characterization is used: Speech, Thoughts, Effect on others, Actions, and Looks. Students are able to delve into the text in order to find each one of these types of characterization. This handout allows them to focus on one character at a time and identify the different types of indirect characterization.
