Included is a Powerpoint providing introductory information and examples of Indirect and Direct characterization.
Also included is a practice activity which provides a fun way to assess the characters in the movie Mean Girls. I start off with a recap of what characterization is and the differences between direct and indirect. I do this using the Frozen video clip that is linked in the document. Next, I use a clip from the movie that has been modified for use in the classroom (a curse word is edited out completely). This is also linked in the document. One could also show other clips from the DVD as there are a plethora of examples of indirect/direct characterization in the film.
One additional activity is a characterization assignment over two Pixar short films. We watch the films in class, then they answer characterization questions over them. There is little to no speaking in Pixar shorts which makes the students have to very closely pay attention and analyze the characters.
