I don't like spelling lists. I couldn't stand giving my students useless lists of words to memorize, but I thought it was important for them to practice spelling. So I experimented with student-generated spelling lists. Not only did my students enjoy learning about spelling in this way, but it also affected the way they spelled in their daily writing!
This pack gives you 30 lessons and 5 review lessons. Each Monday you and your students generate a new spelling list. This is my students' favorite part of our reading block! They brainstorm words based on our weekly spelling pattern. They also brainstorm words that we are learning in other subjects.
Then we make a big class list on chart paper. This is the time when I get to teach about the words. Students love sharing their words and think of it as a challenge to get their words on our list.
Finally they select words from our list and create their own spelling lists. This has been great with my many ELL students. I usually assign them a smaller number of words, and they feel very successful. After they choose their words, I must approve them. If they're good, I initial the page and they put it in their binder. If they need to change something, I mark it accordingly.
There are also four different menus for creative spelling practice throughout the week.
At the end of the week, pair students up for their spelling tests. Kids love giving spelling tests to their peers. I do the grading! Easy and fun!
If that isn't enough, there is also a language focus of the week to make sure you hit all of your language standards!
