Industrial Revolution Determining Your Horsepower Project
This fun activity has your class moving out of the room into a nearby stairwell to determine each student's horsepower! Students work together in groups of 3 to time each other on the steps, then use a simple equation to find out what their horsepower would be.
The introduction explains how James Watt coined the term horsepower as a marketing tool for his steam engine during the Industrial Revolution. Following the activity, students answer a set of questions on their experience and then create a newspaper advertisement for James Watt's steam engine.
This is a very fun activity and a great way to get your class up and active!
