The Industrial Revolution is an essential topic of study with students because it is important for students to know the changes in industry that has occurred within the United States. In addition, the Industrial Revolution encompasses genealogy and how families traveled from Europe to the U.S. bringing heritages and lifestyles. This topic also combines personal with educational information. Teaching this topic in the 5th Grade is age appropriate because students can compare what they know about their families past and what they hear/read, and make a connection. The topics of inventors, transportation, immigration, the workers movement and urbanization are highlighted in this unit. These topics are interconnected and the information from each previous lesson spirals the learning into further unit lessons.
