In this 1 1/2 page reading students will vividly recount the horrors of one working class district affected by industrialism. Assign each student a number between 1 and 15. Students will read assigned lines. Questions on the reading follow. The author is a newspaper reporter who comes face to face with the effects of Cholera, drinking water polluted by raw sewage, and the smell and sight of industrial pollution. Teacher may need to go over a few vocabulary words prior to lesson. This excerpt is also good for creating a found poem.
