This zip contains the following PDF files:

1. A master file with links to all of the PDF files included with this download. With these links you can check for updates to the files and download them at no additional cost.

2. Original mini-textbook, “Industrialization In The Gilded Age” (25 pages, with citations). The reading is divided into the following sections:
The Conundrum of Capitalism
The Working Class
The End of the Century
Urbanization and Immigration

3. The Drinking Glass activity: As a preparatory activity, students will create a presentation of images to answer the opinions questions, “Has industrialization been more of a positive force (the glass is half-full)? Or are the negative consequences of industrialization just too great (the glass is half-empty)?”

4. “I Feed You All!” activity: Students will analyze an 1875 lithograph and a political cartoon that address the concerns of The Grange (2 pages).

5. The Automobile In Song: 1902-1915 activity. Lyrics and covers to 8 pieces of sheet music published during the early days of the automobile are provided for study. 6 multiple-choice questions are designed to help the students analyze, make claims and support them with evidence.

6. Social Darwinism Questionnaire: 8 agree/disagree statements designed as a jumping off point for teachers to lead students in a discussion about the ramifications of Social Darwinism.

7. Conflict of Interest activity: Short biographies are provided on 5 fictional Americans representative of the conflicting needs of business and labor: a second generation skilled worker, an newly immigrated unskilled worker, the native-born wife of a disabled worker, a child laborer, and a wealthy business owner. Each bio presents his situation from his point-of-view. Students are asked to name which American he/she supports most and least, with explanations. Great activity for generating discussions that can be connected to the Social Darwinism Questionnaire.

The Zip also contains a Common Cartridge format file (.imscc) that can be imported into many online Learning Management Systems, including Schoology, Moodle, and NEO. This file will import the entire unit into your LMS, including links to the PDF files. Those links may be used to deliver content directly to your students.

[Note: See your system's guidelines for how to import. This file was created by exporting out of Schoology. When importing, Schoology creates an "unused resources" folder. This can be safely deleted].
