This includes a handout with written instructions for the students and a visual PowerPoint with instructions and examples to complete the project. It specifically states what the instructor is looking for when grading.
Essentially the point is to teach the students how to interpret symbolism and author's purpose within other political cartoons and get them to create their own 'Industrialization' themed political cartoons... to make it even more upper level thinking-based, I specified it down to effects of industrialization.
I've had very good luck with this project every year. In fact, so much so that I've used it multiple times for evaluation lessons. Students enjoy an artistic element of history, but it also motivates them to get a clearer understanding of the content. I usually just give them a sheet of printer paper to do their drawing on, unless they'd rather provide their own materials.
