Cornelius Vanderbilt, also known informally as "Commodore Vanderbilt", was an American business magnate and philanthropist who built his wealth in railroads and shipping. Born poor and with but a mediocre education, his luck, perseverance and intelligence led into leadership positions in the inland water trade, and the rapidly growing railroad industry.

Vanderbilt was born on May 27, 1794, in Staten Island, NY. He began a passenger ferry business in NY harbor with 1 boat, then started his own steamship company, eventually controlling Hudson River traffic. He also provided the first rail service between New York and Chicago. His success in business was often credited to his ability to work harder and more ruthlessly than any of his competitors.

He is best known for building the New York Central Railroad. Vanderbilt is deemed one of America's leading businessmen, and is credited for helping to shape the present-day United States. His sprawling businesses were essentially prototypes of modern corporations. When Vanderbilt died in 1877, his fortune was estimated to be in excess of $100 million.
