This is a review activity I use with my students before they take a unit exam about life in America at the turn of the 20th century. This assignment has them compare life in the east (industrialization) v. life in the west (westward expansion).
The first part of this resource is a comparison chart/graphic organizer that students complete. It requires students to recall key differences in the east and the west such as jobs, homes, available technology and 5 more categories.
The second part of this resource is a business plan outline for students to complete. They are to take on the role of a factory boss in the east to describe how they will use vertical/horizontal integration for their product, create a simple budget to determine how much (or little) they will pay their factory workers, and develop strategies to avoid having their workers join unions.
