Lesson objectives:

1. Big Business Rises presentation - (19 slides, 4 charts, 1 political cartoon, and 3 pictures)

2. Student Notes for presentation - Form

  • 7 questions
  • Assign this at the beginning of the presentation.
  • Students will follow along and complete the sentences on the form.

5. Interactive Gallery: The Courts, Business, and Labor Regulation (1895-1911)

  • This resource is a Google Form linked to an interactive gallery on 4 cases that describes the courts, business, and labor regulations from 1895 to 1911 in the United States.
  • Students will analyze the 4 court cases in the interactive gallery.
  • Students will read each case and classify the court’s decisions as for or against big business on the form.
  • Students will learn about:
    • United States v. E.C. Knight Co. (1895)
    • United States v. Trans-Missouri Freight Association (1897)
    • Lochner v. New York (1905)
    • Standard Oil Company of New Jersey v. U.S.

6.Interactive Gallery: Captains of Industry

  • This product is a Google form and doc linked to an interactive gallery on the Captains of Industry: John D. Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, and Bill Gates.
  • Students can answer the questions on the form while exploring the interactive gallery.
  • Then, students will complete the 2 short answer questions on the doc.
  • Students will learn about:
    • Some captains of industry who amassed great fortunes in the late nineteenth century gave away much of their wealth to benefit society.
    • Modern business leaders, such as Microsoft founder Bill Gates, have emulated their philanthropic activities.  
    • Students can select the images to learn more about these three industrialists and their philanthropy.

This product is editable and the questions and answer options have been shuffled on the forms.
