Product Description

Product Information: This activity a fun way to practice solving inequality word problems. There are many ways in which you could complete this activity, but this is how I play it in my class:

Before beginning the activity, you will need to cut out the clues and place them in an envelope. I label the outside of the envelope with the clue number. If there are 15 teams, then you will need to cut out 15 clues. I place the envelopes on a table in the back of my classroom.

I begin the activity by handing the students the introduction paper and the list of possible suspects, food choices, locations + times. Together as a team, I have them make a hypothesis. Who committed the crime? What did they steal? Where did it happen? What time was it? I go around and collect the team predictions. Next, I hand out the activity paper and tell students to begin. They could technically complete the problems in any order, but it is easier to check the answers when they are going in order. As teams finish a question, they get their answer checked by me. If they are correct, they go get the clue for that problem. Clue number one goes with problem number one. The clues will provide them with information to check off their sheet. If an eye witness spotted Tonya in the gym eating chili, then they can cross Tonya, the gym and chili off of the list. If the group gets the problem wrong, they must go back and fix the problem. They can’t get the clue until the problem is correct. By the end, the clues will have eliminated all choices except for one person, one location, one food choice and one time.

This mystery activity is a fun + engaging way for students to practice inequality word problems!
