This close reading is a one or two class period lesson plan with study guide. An extension writing assignment with rubric is also included. The lesson plan also includes a video link as a hook. This lesson introduces the Holocaust and gives students practice inferencing and identifying cause and effect relationships of a plot.
“The Yellow Star: The Legend of King Christian X of Denmark” introduces the Holocaust by presenting the persecution of the Jews. It also demonstrates resistance to an invading country by a king who seemingly has lost his power, but not the love of his people. This well-crafted story introduces the concepts of persecution with suggestions of genocide. More importantly, it demonstrates resistance against the Nazi demands to impose prejudice, racial profiling, and segregation on an unwilling population. Furthermore, it is a cleverly constructed story requiring students to make inferences and draw conclusions by analyzing the text and illustrations to determine meaning.
