PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Use Alice Walker’s shortest of short stories to teach your high schoolers and advanced middle schoolers how to use text clues and prior knowledge to make advanced inferences–all while having fun along the way.

In this CSI inference activity, students work in “investigative units” to determine what happened to the victim in the story. Using the clues from the text, they look at the evidence through the eyes of investigators, medical examiners, witness and chief detective to generate and present their hypothesis.

This packet includes:

Copy of the story—so that students can annotate as they read
CSI investigative activity—in which students find clues and act as investigators, medical examiners and witness to make and report their findings
Close reading activity—in which students answer questions to analyze mood, plot, vocabulary, setting and symbolism to understand the many layers of the story
Summary/reflection activity—in which students are asked a thought-provoking question to write about what they learned
Detailed answer keys—including sample reports to generally make your life easier

Written by one of the most prominent African-American authors and activists of our time, "The Flowers" is an excellent selection for Black History Month, as it explores the perspective of a young African-American girl in pre-Civil Rights America. It's also a great choice for teaching inference, as there is more left unsaid than stated in the short story, leaving it up the students to piece the details together to figure out the big picture. It’s a story of many layers, and the activities in this packet will enable students to reveal and analyze them in order to fully appreciate its important messages.
