This activity follows the Reading Standard for Informational text: "Refer to details and examples in a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text."
In this activity, students will be given a set of clues to find out who stole Mr.Green's lawnmower. There is a PowerPoint presentation that includes the problem and the clues to help solve the mystery. The clues that are included are: Employee Schedule, Employee Fingerprints, Newspaper Clipping, Police Report, and the Employee Background Information files.
What is suggested, is that you follow along with the PowerPoint slides. As you come across each clue in the PowerPoint, have the students discuss the possible culprit. Once all of the clues are out, students can look back and forth at all clues to make their inferences using the text evidence to solve the mystery.
Very fun activity when I completed it with my 4th Graders!
