Product Description
This product is a structured approach to give students a metacognition strategy to use when making an inference from a short reading.
●Metacognition is an awareness or analysis of one's own thinking process. It includes knowledge of how to use a particular strategy for problem solving. It also includes planning how to approach a task, and the ability remember and use that metacognition strategy in the future.
Contents include:
(Tools to enhance student metacognition)
♦Included are two charts. One is to help students visualize what they should be thinking as they infer. The other is a definition of making an inference. Use both, or choose the appropriate chart for your students' level of functioning and to differentiate your instruction.
♦A graphic organizer is also included so that students may provide a written response that matches their thinking. This is an important tool to use with students. It will help with the process. This graphic organizer provides a section to write what you have read, i.e. context clues, and then a section to make a connection to prior knowledge the student already has. This is also a great tool for differentiated instruction.
●25 short reading for students to practice their skills (laminate, place loose leaf ring or in a binder for multiple uses)
Using all parts of this packet, and practicing this step by step approach, will enable students to remember and implement this strategy in the future when asked to make inferences.
Possible Uses
●Balanced literacy instruction (begin with these structured exercises then move to assigned readings) Continue to use graphic organizer and visual charts to differentiate your instruction for students who require these supports
●Practice for standardized testing
●Set up as a center
●Use in small group work. Split up students and compare the inferences from a variety of groups
●Use in large group instruction, pass out graphic organizer read or display prompt, have students share inferences in a class discussion
●Utilize with students who struggle with this concept
●Utilize with below grade level students
●Documentation of alternative intervention strategies to teach this specific skill
●May be of particular help for Special Education, Remedial, ELL students. Written with supports that would accommodate these below grade level learners.
