Description

These four print-and-go trifolds target the skill of making inferences. Use these inference trifolds over the course of 4 days to provide targeted instruction on this topic.

As I was creating these trifolds, I pictured myself using them with small groups of students. Specifically, I envisioned sitting around a table with a group of students who needed some targeted instruction and additional opportunities to practice making inferences as they read fiction and nonfiction texts. That being said, however, you can also successfully use these trifolds in a large group setting or assign them as independent work.

These making inferences trifolds progress from basic to more complex. Answer keys are included, along with additional teacher notes for EACH trifold. CHECK OUT THE PREVIEW to get a good feel for what you will get if you choose to purchase this resource.

Trifold #1: In the first panel, students are introduced to the two key components of making inferences: text and schema (background knowledge). The remaining four panels include 10 short reading passages. After reading each passage, students must make an inference in order to correctly answer the question. Students also highlight the text clues provided by the author that allowed them to make the inference.

Trifold #2: Students learn about the importance of visualizing as they infer. Panel A includes an illustrated explanation. Panels B and C contain fiction passages. After reading the passage, students draw a quick sketch to show what they visualized as they read. Then, students must make an inference in order to correctly answer the question about the passage. Panels D and E contain nonfiction passages. Again, students show what they visualized and then answer the inference question.

Trifold #3: All of the questions in this foldable have two parts. First, students are required to make logical inferences in order to answer the questions. Then, students are asked to justify each answer. To do this, students must return to the text to look for evidence, and/or explain their background knowledge. Panels A and B contain fiction passages, and Panel D contains a nonfiction passage.

Trifold #4: The main objective for this tri-fold is expose students to multiple choice questions related to making inferences. Students will likely encounter questions like these on standardized tests. This tri-fold includes 3 different passages (2 fiction and 1 nonfiction) and 9 multiple choice questions.
