Making inferences and drawing conclusions are vitally important skills for good readers to master. This engaging lesson asks students to help a sleuth, Detective Dimwit, solve a puzzling case by examining clues in a step-by-step method using inference and conclusion. “The Case of the Crafty Catnapper,” a short, humorous, original mystery written by me, will keep students engaged and entertained as they work to hone their skills of making inferences and drawing conclusions. The scaffolded, logical step by step approach will help to keep students on track and guide them toward the final solution of the case.
Note: This activity is best suited for advanced students in grades 4 and 5; for on-grade-level students in grades 6 and 7; and for struggling readers in grades 8 and above.
