Making inferences and drawing conclusions are vitally important skills for good readers to master. This engaging lesson asks students to help a sleuth, Detective Dimwit, solve a puzzling case by examining clues in a step-by-step method using inference and conclusion. “The Case of the Backwards Book,” a short, humorous, original mystery written by me, will keep students engaged and entertained as they work to hone their skills of making inferences and drawing conclusions. The scaffolded, logical step-by-step approach will help to keep students on track and guide them toward the final solution of the case.
Note: This activity is best suited for advanced students in grades 4 and 5; for on-grade-level students in grades 6 and 7; and for struggling readers in grades 8 and above.
