The informational text unit has two sets of task cards which include pictures. Pictures are a great way to teach inferencing before targeting the text more directly. One set of task cards has a variety of different pictures and asks kids to make an inference based on what they observe. The second set of cards called "What is it?" has pictures of little known objects or antique items like an old washing machine or an early football helmet and asks kids to make inferences looking at the object as well as reading the clue on each card. Task cards are great for centers, one on one work, fast finishers, whole class or partner activity. I especially like to use them as a rotating station activity.

The activities in this bundle are fun and interactive. For example, who doesn't want to know what their teacher keeps in her purse? Who wouldn't have fun searching through "clean" trash and making inferences about the family it belongs to? Who would object to a homework assignment that allows you to bring a mystery item in a bag, write clues about it and share it with the class? These fun activities all lead up to mastering the skill of making inferences from the text.

This set also contains interesting nonfiction text with intriguing topics that you and your kids will enjoy. It requires kids to answer questions that are expressed explicitly in the text as well as implied. The template included is another tool to help you expand this unit to topics from your science book, social studies book or even to the Time for Kids/Scholastic magazine that you may use in your classroom.

The literature unit is loaded with everything you need to teach this very foundational reading strategy. It includes student passages (Aesop's Fables, a Greek Myth and folktales from around the world), that are great because they give your students an opportunity to practice making inferences. You can even save one of them and use it as an end of the unit assessment if you wish.

I love the two sets of task cards for inferences using literature. One has pictures of people or animals and asks kids to determine what's going on in the picture. The other one is a set of three short sentences that describe a situation. Students have to make an inference to determine what's happening in each scenario. Use these for whole class teaching, maybe a few a day as a reading warm up or for a small group. Better yet, set them around the room and pass out student record sheets so kids can get up and moving around the room to solve inference puzzles together.

The Inferences from a Shopping Bag game is an easy one to set up. Gather 32 shopping bags (small paper ones that stand up) or use brown lunch sacks in a pinch. Put a shopping bag cover on each (included) and add a number 1 – 32. Place the three clue cards in each shopping bag and kids have to infer for whom the items were purchased by looking at the three cards. Then they record it on their record sheet and you can discuss it together if you'd like.

I can't say enough about how excited I am about teaching inferences with this unit. It screams "fun"…okay fun AND good learning experiences.

***Please note that this bundle is deeply discounted but if you would like to purchase each item separately, here they are:
