Keys for all
Inferencing can be tricky but this unit has a variety of different formats and activities that allow your kids to focus on this reading skill. The passages are great because they give your students an opportunity to practice inferencing and you can save one of them and use it as an end of the unit assessment if you wish.
I love the two sets of task cards. One is an Inferences from Picture set and has pictures of people or animals and asks kids to determine what's going on in the picture. The other one is a Inferences from Riddles set and has three short sentences on each card that describe a situation. Students have to make an inference to determine what's happening in each scenario. Use these for whole class teaching, maybe a few a day as a reading warm up or for a small group. Better yet, set them around the room and pass out student record sheets so kids can get up and moving around the room to solve inference puzzles together.
The Inferences from a Shopping Bag game is an easy one to set up. Gather 32 shopping bags (small paper ones that stand up) or use brown lunch sacks in a pinch. Put a shopping bag cover on each (included) and add a number 1 – 32. Place the three clue cards in each shopping bag and kids have to infer for whom the items were purchased by looking at the three cards. Then they record it on their record sheet and you can discuss it together if you'd like.
Inferences Using Informational Text is one of my best selling item and I'm hoping that this companion piece will be just as helpful. I think this unit is pure fun to teach and that makes it fun for the kids too. There's a unit for 3rd Grade and also one for 4th/5th.
