This five lesson Reading Sequence on inferencing provides your students with activities and assignments that help develop the skill of inferring. Inference building is a learned skill. This package is divided into three sections:
Part A: Before Reading
There are two lessons that set the students up for sharpening their inferencing skills. Lesson #1 introduces the skill through visual images using a strategy called concept attainment. Lesson #2 uses a pseudo-science report and has the students differentiating between what were the facts and what were the inferences. Students make a prediction based on that evidence.
Part B: During Reading
Using the short story ‘People of the Third Planet’ by Dale Crail (included in this package), students use what they learned in the previous lessons to gather evidence (facts), identify and make inferences and finally, draw conclusions.
Part C: After Reading (Transforming from the story)
Students engage in a creative and engaging writing project (Talk Show) to showcase their understanding of making inferences. This would take 2-3 days to complete.
This package is complete, no prep is required. It comes with:
a. Extensive Teacher Instructions (Read Me File)
b. Answer Keys and a Final T-Chart (Simple Rubric)
c. A complete PowerPoint slide show that is used throughout the lesson. Everything is done for you.
d. A student handout package that contains the graphic organizers and materials to complete this entire reading sequence.
