This download is full of so many rich teaching opportunities within each slide. In the download, you will find a fun poem divided into 27 slides. The remaining slides include self-checking answer slides and teaching slides for other teaching topics such as context clues. This download is broken into a repetitive sequence for you to follow if you wish to do so based on the needs and level of your kids. The sequence is as follows:
Slide 1- stanza of poem with a word left out. Blanks are added
for the number of letters in the missing word. Each
missing word is in alphabetical order so the blank of the
next letter in the alphabet is coded in the color red.
Slide 2- a self-checking slide that gives the answer to the
missing word with a picture that best represents that
Slide 3- A copy of the first slide but this time the correct word is
included in context. This is another self-checking slide
with the potential for many great teaching
opportunities. This side is two-fold. It uses the
missing word in context, but it also is a prime time to
talk about context clues. Which words in the stanza
were a clue to you? Which words or phrases in the
stanza helped you to know what the missing word was
going to be?
Slide 4- Another self-checking slide but this time for context
clues. The context clues have been highlighted in
in yellow. These are just the clues that I, as a teacher,
would have pulled out to show my students. You may
find others or you may not agree with my thinking on
this. In this case, just use the third slide without the
context clues highlighted to teach the context clues.
The second part of this download is a section of “extra” teaching opportunities that include some great nuggets of information that arise in some of the slides. These include examples of quotation marks used in dialogue, onomatopoeia, idiom, and synonyms.
The last section is the entire poem as written with blanks and then again without blanks. This could serve older students or more advanced students well. You can have them fill in the poem as you are learning each section. It can be kept in their reading
binders/folders. This holds the students accountable for the lessons that you do with the poem. This last section is great for differentiation and meeting the accommodation needs of your students.
