This short printable exercise was a great discussion starter with my seventh and eighth grade classes. On the first two pages, I have a list of details about the cartoon, and ask the students to decide whether they are facts or inferences. Many of the cartoons led to such immediate inferences that the students were convinced they were facts. This led us to a discussion on how often and immediately we make inferences in our daily lives. The last three pages ask students to come up with their own facts and inferences about three cartoons.
