Inferring..... Isn't it a hard skill to assess??? Especially for first grade. Most texts on first grade level do not lend themselves well to making inferences.
My team and I were having a really hard time finding material that would assess how well our students were mastering making inferences. I made a few little passages that finally developed into this packet. It has been really great. You can really see who is doing great and who is struggling using these pages.
I teach first grade. I don't expect all of my students to know every word, but they do know the majority. I tell them a word if they can't get it by themselves. They are all reading on level G or higher.
About This Packet
There are 24 kid friendly mini passages with an inferring graphic organizer for each. The text are all pretty simple. The work is differentiated, not the text. The non fiction text is more difficult.
Because I know how busy teachers are, I have provided a key for each passage.
Scaffold Your Inferring Instruction By:
Giving students the inference – Have the them find the text that corresponds to that inference (Step 1: This is a great starting place)
Giving students the text that contains the inference – Have them find the inference in that text (Step 2: After doing the first step, this will come easier to them)
Giving students the passage with a blank graphic organizer and have them find 3 inferences and the text that corresponds to them. (Step 3: This is the most challenging part. )
One thing I have found is that if you use the word "because" to make a connection between what the text says and what it probably means, the students aren't as likely to write something that doesn't make sense.
