Common Core Aligned!
Several years ago I implemented a lesson from PBS that involved analyzing Lewis Hine photographs. My students loved the mini-unit because the photos showed people living much differently than we do now, and they loved using the details to guess and infer what was happening in the photo.
It dawned on me that analyzing old photos would be a great bridge to INFERRING while reading. Inferential thinking is also a great higher level thinking skill. When analyzing the photos, the students have to take their time and look closely at all of the details and then be able to support their inference by referring back to the image. These are skills that they can transfer to inferring while reading.
I use this activity in a LITERACY CENTER!
