Students have fun selecting an influential figure from the images on the PowerPoint and then research the person for either a collaborative class Google Drive slideshow or an APA formatted research paper.
I put the slide up and let them come to the SMARTboard to click on the image that speaks to them. The picture will fly out and the name of the person is revealed so that no other students may choose that person.
I used to have them choose from the list on the assignment sheet, but once I made the slide of images it became much more fun and relevant because they choose a figure based on a visual connection. There is a great diversity of figures; past and present, male and female, ethnicity, age, and ways of influencing the food and restaurant industry. Some are obvious and some are more subtle.
I have given this project to middle and high school students as just a paper, as a paper and the Google slides project and just as the Google slides project. It works well in any of those variations and having 3 options makes it easy to differentiate!
Included are the PowerPoint slide with animated images, an assignment sheet for the collaborative Google slideshow and an assignment sheet for the APA formatted paper.
You decide the criteria for grading and point values and, if you choose the APA paper, it is assumed that you will have already taught a lesson in formatting.
Great way to tie in 21st century skills, writing, technology and collaboration. Enjoy!
