Do you have a classroom with children from low-income families and of different backgrounds? These posters are a great way to promote cultural diversity and instilling the idea of overcoming obstacles in your students. I chose nine people who have overcome barriers in their life to make a name for themselves. Included are:
Oprah Winfrey- came from poverty, has donated a lot of money to an all girls school in South Africa
Nelson Mandela- first black South African president
Sally Ride- first American woman in space
Jeremy Lin- endured racist slurs while playing in the NBA
Debbie Allen- African American choreographer and producer; guest judge on "So You Think You Can Dance"
Selena- Famous for becoming one of the first popular female artists within the Latino community and showing girls what's possible
Cesar Millan- the famous "dog whisperer"; has a reality television show about training aggressive dogs and teaching their owners how to train their dogs; crossed the Mexican border when he was 21 and spoke no English; now owns a huge dog rehabilitation center in California (good for ELL students)
MLK Jr.- We all know him!
George Lopez- Abandoned by parents when he was young; Grandmother took care of him but didn't pay him much attention; He used these experiences as part of his stand-up material. He also refuses to play characters on TV that show Latinos in a negative light.
