An infographic is a multi-modal, visual representation of data that can include different forms of text : flowcharts, diagrams images, and many more, used to communicate a message, present large amounts of data meaningfully, and reveal hidden data for the viewer. Given the growing mainstream use of infographics, they are becoming valuable educational materials to use in both teaching and learning.
This activity encourages students to interpret and analyze infographics through critical thought and evaluation of the data, design elements and pint-of-view of the author. It can be used as a one time activity or a regular part of literacy, science, math and/or social studies class.
The advanced version includes additional questions, less built-in scaffolding, and increases the level of vocabulary and thinking in several of the questions and requires students to justify their thinking with extended response questions.
