Description

Capitalize on the appeal of this medium and hook your students into reading and making non-fiction!

This gradual-release project includes everything you need to guide students in making visual aids and presenting facts to each other. In this project, students develop background knowledge, analyze the purpose and characteristics of modern infographics, and then proceed to make their own to present to the class!

The best part? The prompt is up to you. Possible uses include:

• Literary movements & time periods

• Specific authors and books

• How-to infographics (especially about ELA skills)

• Instructional aids (i.e. grammar and research rules)

• Cross-curricular topics (i.e. the History of English, World Literature, the Science of Books, etc.)

Students are given several options of websites, software, and hard copy posters so that the project can be done in a high-tech or low-tech classroom; teachers can utilize this project even if they don’t have a lot of experience with design, data representation, or computers. Depending on your homework policies and time spent presenting, this project would likely take about two weeks.

Each portion of the project has its own Common Core rubric row, in addition to the full CCSS rubric page for the project itself, but the entire project is EDITABLE in case you don’t use the Common Core (or just want to tweak the requirements for your level of tech and comfort). This project was made with grades 8-10 in mind, but it would easily hook middle school students and would also work as-is for regular classrooms of juniors or seniors. (Amp up the citation, design, and data requirements for the high school crowd!)

This 11-page download includes:

• Overview and directions pages

• Non-Fiction reading activity: read a Forbes article and complete a quiz

• Infographic Analysis: examine a single choice infographic to infer genre characteristics

• Infographic Spotlight: Compare and contrast two infographics for author purpose and design

• Brainstorm page: Help students plan what data to include and how the design should look

• Project rubric: CCSS writing, speaking, and grammar

• Presentation guide: use for active listening and self-assessment of the presentation day

• Pre/Post assessment: ten short answer questions to jumpstart thinking and reflect

Common Core standards used: RI.1, RI.7,W.2.A/B.E, W.5, SL.1.A&C, L.2
